Today we will talk about a recent nutritional study linking the foods we eat, or don't eat, to mortality. Do you eat enough fruit on a daily basis? Are you eating too many highly processed meats?
The JAMA study showed that not eating enough fruit led to 7.5% of diet-related "cardio-metabolic deaths" in 2012 and 9.5% were related to high-sodium diets.
Cardio-metabolic death mortality is due to heart disease, stroke, or Type 2 diabetes. In 2012, 702, 308 of these deaths occurred, with almost half (45.5%) due to sub-optimal dietary intake of specific food and nutrients. Make sure to eat those fruits and veggies! And don't forget nuts and seeds.
We recommend (per day):
2-3 servings of fruit
4-5 servings of veggies
1 serving of nuts or seeds
It just may help keep you alive!
Not big on leafy greens? No problem. Make a smoothie with bananas, berries, a handful of almonds and leafy greens, and you've got a tasty AND nutritional powerhouse right at your fingertips.
